Roll a d12

A d12 is a twelve-sided die whose faces are pentagons. Each result from 1 to 12 has an equal 8.33% (1 in 12) chance, and the average roll is 6.5. In D&D the d12 is the barbarian's hit die and the greataxe's damage die, so it gets rolled less often than other dice. Roll it below.

Where you roll a d12 in D&D

Barbarians: The barbarian is the only class with a d12 hit die, starting with 12 + Constitution modifier hit points and rolling a d12 (or taking 7) each level.

Weapons: The greataxe deals 1d12 slashing damage, the biggest single damage die on a standard weapon. A greatsword deals 2d6 instead, which averages 7 against the greataxe's 6.5 but is less swingy.

Spells: Toll the Dead deals 1d12 necrotic damage to a creature that is already missing hit points (1d8 otherwise).

Roll a d12 FAQ

What is the average roll on a d12?

The average roll on a d12 is 6.5, because the numbers 1 to 12 add up to 78 and 78 / 12 = 6.5.

What are the odds of rolling a 12 on a d12?

Each face of a fair d12 has a 1 in 12 (about 8.33%) chance. Rolling 7 or higher is a 50% chance.

Is a greataxe (1d12) better than a greatsword (2d6)?

A greatsword averages slightly more damage (7 versus 6.5) and is more consistent. A greataxe has the same chance of every result from 1 to 12, so it rolls very high or very low more often.

About this roller

DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
