Roll a d3

A 1d3 roll gives a result of 1, 2 or 3, each with an equal 33.33% (1 in 3) chance, and the average roll is 2. Physical d3s are rare, so the usual method is to roll a d6, divide by two and round up: 1-2 is 1, 3-4 is 2, and 5-6 is 3. Press Roll below to roll.

How to roll a d3 and where you use one

Roll a d3 with a d6: Roll a d6, halve the result and round up. A 1 or 2 becomes 1, a 3 or 4 becomes 2, and a 5 or 6 becomes 3. Each d3 result covers exactly two faces of the d6, so the odds stay fair. You can also count 1–2, 3–4 and 5–6 on a d6 in your head without any math.

Random tables and choices: A d3 is handy whenever there are three options: which of three corridors a patrol takes, which of three rumors an innkeeper shares, or how many extra guards show up (1d3). Adventure writers often use 1d3 for small counts, like the number of rounds an effect lasts or the number of creatures in a group.

Older and variant rules: Earlier editions of D&D used 1d3 for things like a Medium creature's unarmed strike in 3rd edition. In 5e, an unarmed strike usually deals a flat 1 plus your Strength modifier instead, but DMs who want a little variance sometimes house-rule 1d3. You can combine several d3s too: 2d3 ranges from 2 to 6.

Roll a d3 FAQ

How do you roll a d3 with a d6?

Roll a d6, divide the result by 2 and round up. 1-2 counts as 1, 3-4 counts as 2, and 5-6 counts as 3, so every result has the same 1 in 3 chance.

What is the average of 1d3?

The average of 1d3 is 2, because (1 + 2 + 3) / 3 = 2. Two d3s (2d3) average 4.

Do d3 dice exist?

Yes. Some are rounded triangular prisms and others are d6s numbered 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3. Most players simply roll a regular d6 and halve it.

What are the odds of rolling a 3 on a d3?

Each result on a fair d3 has a 33.33% (1 in 3) chance. Rolling a 2 or higher is a 66.67% chance.

About this roller

DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
