Example names by species
| Species | Example names | Naming style |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Leoric Ambrose, Edda Langley, Edmund Penhallow, Dagny Kestrel | Human names borrow from many real-world traditions, so mix old-fashioned given names with surnames taken from places, trades or landmarks. |
| Elf | Vaelor Glimmerdew, Zhaeris Moonbrook, Yrendil Rhylvaris, Thaliara Rainlily | Elven names are long and flowing, full of soft vowels and l, r and th sounds, and family names often translate to an image from nature. |
| Dwarf | Ingvald Ashbeard, Kolla Brassbuckle, Dolgrin Boulderback, Gudrun Thundermug | Dwarf names are short and hard-edged with Norse-sounding consonants, and the clan name usually names a craft, a stone or a famous ancestor's deed. |
| Halfling | Nob Puddingstone, Olive Greenmeadow, Cobb Toadflax, Juniper Mapleton | Halfling names sound homely and cheerful: short nicknames, flowers and herbs for first names, and family names drawn from farms, food and the countryside. |
| Gnome | Mopple Jinglewick, Sprinkle Dinglewick, Nubbin Tockwhistle, Clemmie Quickwhistle | Gnome names are playful and bouncy, with doubled consonants and diminutive endings, and gnomes often collect several nicknames over a long life. |
| Orc | Zarg Gristlejaw, Neshka Ironmaw, Ardak Emberfang, Hesk Bloodtusk | Orc names are short and guttural, often one or two syllables with hard g, k and r sounds, and a tribe name that boasts of strength or a famous victory. |
| Tiefling | Xavren Scorchmark, Cindriel Harbor, Pyrrax Whisper, Zaressa Kindle | Tieflings often carry names with an infernal or classical ring, and many drop their family name for a single word that sums up what they hope to be. |
| Dragonborn | Mezrak Brazharrian, Tazira Gharrathondal, Orvath Xarrathusk, Sevrith Haarthuvex | Dragonborn names have a hissing, rolling draconic sound, and the clan name, usually long, comes first when a dragonborn introduces themselves formally. |
How to use the name generator
Pick a species: Each species has its own lists of first names and family names, written to match how that people sounds in a typical fantasy setting. Dwarves get blunt Norse-style names and stony clan names, elves get long flowing ones, and gnomes get something cheerful and silly.
Player characters: Roll a few times and keep the name that fits the character in your head. If the first name works but the surname does not, mix and match. Nothing stops you from giving an elf raised by dwarves a dwarven clan name. New to the game? Start with how to play D&D.
NPCs on the fly: Players will ask the innkeeper's name at the worst moment. Keep this page open during a session and roll whenever someone new walks into the scene. Jot each name down so the same blacksmith keeps the same name next week.
Running the session: Once the party has names, track turn order with the initiative tracker and plan fights with the encounter calculator. After the battle, the loot generator fills their pockets.
DnD Name Generator FAQ
How do I come up with a good D&D character name?
Start with the character's species and background, then pick a name that is easy for the whole table to say. Roll a few options here, keep the one that fits, and add a nickname if your character would have one.
Are these names from the Player's Handbook?
No. Every name list on this page was written for this site. The rulebooks include their own sample names, which you can also use at your table.
Do dragonborn say their clan name first?
In the usual D&D lore, dragonborn put their clan name before their personal name in formal settings, showing that the clan matters more than the individual. Your table can change that.
Can I use these names for NPCs and other games?
Yes. The names work for any fantasy game, story or campaign, for player characters and non-player characters alike.
What if my species is not listed?
Borrow the closest list. Half-elves can use elf or human names, goliaths fit well with dwarf or orc names, and aasimar suit human or tiefling names.

About this roller
DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
