Random Encounter Generator
This 5e random encounter generator builds a balanced fight in one click. Enter your party size and level, choose Low, Moderate or High difficulty, and it picks one to three kinds of SRD monsters whose total XP fits the 2024 encounter budget, with links to every stat block and roll button.
Set your party and press Generate.
How the encounter generator works
XP budget: The generator multiplies the 2024 XP budget for your party level by the number of characters. A party of four level 3 characters gets 900 XP for a Moderate fight, for example. It then fills that budget with monsters, leaving out creatures so weak they would barely register.
Mix and theme: Choose up to three different monster kinds for a varied fight, or limit it to one creature type (undead for a crypt, beasts for a forest road, fiends for a cult) so the encounter makes sense in your setting. Press Generate again for a new roll.
Run it: Every monster links to its page with the full stat block and buttons for initiative, attacks and damage. Check the numbers with the encounter calculator, roll initiative in the initiative tracker, and hand out treasure with the loot generator.
Random Encounter Generator FAQ
How do you make a random encounter in 5e?
Work out the party's XP budget for the difficulty you want, then pick monsters whose combined XP fits it. This generator does both steps: it uses the 2024 budget per character and fills it with SRD monsters.
What does Low, Moderate and High difficulty mean?
They are the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide bands. Low fights are a light drain on resources, Moderate fights are a real challenge, and High fights can kill characters if the party plays badly or is already hurt.
Can I generate encounters for a specific environment?
Filter by creature type to fit the location, such as undead for a crypt or elementals for a volcano. The SRD data does not list environments, so the type filter is the closest match.
Does it use the 2014 or 2024 rules?
The 2024 XP budget, which adds up monster XP without the 2014 multiplier. To compare both systems, put the result into the encounter calculator.

About this roller
DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
