2024 backgrounds: ability boosts and Origin feats

How the character generator works

Scores where they matter: The generator uses the standard array or rolls 4d6 drop lowest, then puts the highest score in the class's main ability and the next in Constitution or its second ability. Want to roll scores by hand? Use the stat roller.

Background bonuses: In the 2024 rules your background, not your species, raises your ability scores. The generator picks a background that can raise your main ability, adds +2 and +1 to the two abilities your class values most, and lists the background's Origin feat. Hit points and names: Level 1 hit points are the class's hit die maximum plus your Constitution modifier (plus 1 for a dwarf, or 2 with the Tough feat). For higher levels, use the HP calculator. Names come from the same lists as the name generator.

How do I make a random D&D character?

Press Generate. The tool picks a species, class, background and alignment, places ability scores to suit the class, applies the background's +2 and +1, and works out hit points, saving throws and the Origin feat for a level 1 character.

Does it use the 2014 or 2024 rules?

The 2024 rules: the 12 classes, 10 species and 16 backgrounds from the 2024 Player's Handbook, with ability bonuses coming from the background. For 2014 rules, move the +2 and +1 to your species' ability bonuses instead.

Can I choose the class or species?

Yes. Pick a class, a species or both, and the generator randomizes the rest. You can also switch between the standard array and rolling 4d6 drop lowest.

Is a random character good for a real game?

It is a fast, legal starting point for one-shots, NPCs or inspiration. Before a long campaign, check the build with your DM and choose skills, spells and equipment from your class.

About this roller

DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
