DnD Loot Generator

This DnD loot generator rolls random treasure for 5e. Pick a challenge rating band (0-4, 5-10, 11-16 or 17+) and choose an individual monster's pocket change or a full hoard. Hoards add gems, art objects and magic items sorted by rarity. The tables are our own, built to fit typical 5e wealth.

  • Pick a challenge tier and press Generate.

How the loot generator works

Our own tables: The coin amounts, gem and art lists and item odds on this page were written for this site, not copied from the Dungeon Master's Guide. They are scaled to the four usual tiers of play, so a goblin carries a handful of copper while an ancient dragon's hoard runs to tens of thousands of gold pieces. The magic item names come from the System Reference Document.

Individual or hoard: Use individual treasure for what a single creature carries, such as a bandit's purse. Use a hoard for the payoff at the end of a dungeon or the lair of a big monster. Hoards are much larger and are the only place gems, art objects and magic items appear.

Make it yours: Treat every result as a first draft. Reroll anything that does not fit, swap a magic item for one a player would love, or turn a gem into a quest hook. If the party is already rich, roll from a lower band; if they are short on gear, roll from a higher one.

Plan the fight first: Use the encounter calculator to build a fair fight, then roll the reward here. Need a name for the merchant who buys the loot? Try the name generator. For your own random tables, roll a d100.

DnD Loot Generator FAQ

How much gold should players get in 5e?

There is no fixed rule. Low-level characters usually handle tens to hundreds of gold pieces, while high-level parties can find tens of thousands in a single hoard. This generator scales coins to the challenge rating you pick.

What is the difference between individual treasure and a hoard?

Individual treasure is the small amount of coin one creature carries. A hoard is a large stash, usually found once or twice per adventure, and is where gems, art objects and magic items appear.

Are these the Dungeon Master's Guide treasure tables?

No. The amounts, gem and art descriptions and rarity odds are original to this site. Magic item names come from the System Reference Document, which is free to use.

Which challenge rating should I pick?

Pick the band that matches the strongest creature guarding the treasure, or the party's level if the loot is not tied to a monster. Levels 1 to 4 roughly match challenge 0 to 4.

Can I change what the generator gives me?

Yes. Reroll any result, replace a magic item with one that suits your party, or scale the coins up or down. The DM always has the final say on treasure.

About this roller

DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
