DnD Initiative Tracker

This DnD initiative tracker rolls a d20 plus each combatant's initiative bonus, sorts everyone from highest to lowest, and tracks whose turn it is and the current round. Add the party and the monsters, press Roll initiative, then press Next turn as combat moves around the table. Your list is saved in this browser.

How to use the initiative tracker

Add combatants: Type a name and initiative bonus (usually the Dexterity modifier, plus any bonuses such as the Alert feat) and press Add. Add monsters individually, or one entry per group if they act together.

Roll and run combat: Roll initiative rolls a d20 for everyone and sorts the order. Ties go to the higher bonus, which is a common table convention; the rules leave ties to the DM and players. Next turn moves the marker and counts rounds. Read the full rules in initiative in 5e.

Saved automatically: The list is kept in this browser, so a refresh doesn't lose your fight. Nothing is sent to a server. To balance the fight before it starts, use the encounter calculator.

DnD Initiative Tracker FAQ

How is initiative calculated in 5e?

Initiative is a Dexterity check: roll a d20 and add your Dexterity modifier plus any bonuses, such as proficiency from the 2024 Alert feat. Everyone acts in order from highest to lowest.

Who goes first on a tie?

The rules let the DM decide ties between monsters and characters, and the players decide ties among their own characters. This tracker breaks ties by the higher bonus, which is a common house rule.

How does surprise work with initiative?

In the 2024 rules, a surprised creature rolls initiative with disadvantage. In the 2014 rules, a surprised creature can't move or act on its first turn and can't take reactions until that turn ends.

Does the tracker save my list?

Yes. Combatants, rolls and the current turn are saved in your browser's local storage, so they survive a page refresh on the same device.

About this roller

DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
