How to calculate hit points in 5e

Level 1: You get the maximum of your hit die plus your Constitution modifier: 10 + Con for a fighter, 12 + Con for a barbarian, 6 + Con for a wizard.

Each level after 1st: Either roll your hit die (a d8, d10, d12 or d6) or take the fixed value, which is half the die plus 1 (5 for a d8), then add your Constitution modifier. This calculator never gives less than 1 hit point for a level, the common ruling when a low roll and a negative modifier would add up to zero or less.

Bonuses: The Tough feat adds 2 hit points per level, and dwarves add 1 per level. If your Constitution modifier changes, your maximum changes retroactively for every level. Read more in hit dice in 5e.

HP Calculator 5e FAQ

How do you calculate HP in 5e?

At level 1 you get your hit die maximum plus your Constitution modifier. Each later level adds a hit die roll or its fixed value (half the die plus 1) plus your Constitution modifier.

Should I roll for HP or take the average?

The fixed value is slightly above the true average of the die (5 versus 4.5 on a d8), so over many levels it gives more hit points on average and never leaves you with a terrible roll. Rolling is a gamble some tables enjoy.

How much HP does a level 5 fighter have?

With a +2 Constitution modifier and fixed values, a level 5 fighter has 44 hit points: 12 at level 1 plus 8 for each of the next four levels.

How does multiclassing affect HP?

Your first class gives the level 1 maximum. Every level in another class adds that class's hit die roll or fixed value plus your Constitution modifier. Work out each class's levels separately and add them.

About this roller

DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
