Where you roll 2d6 in D&D
Heavy weapons: The greatsword and the maul both deal 2d6 damage, slashing and bludgeoning respectively. Add your Strength modifier, so a fighter with 16 Strength averages 7 + 3 = 10 damage per hit. On a critical hit you roll the damage dice twice, making it 4d6 + modifier (see critical hits in 5e).
Scorching Ray: Scorching Ray is a 2nd-level spell that creates three rays. Each ray is a separate ranged spell attack, and each one that hits deals 2d6 fire damage. If all three hit, that is 6d6 fire damage, an average of 21. Casting it with a higher-level slot adds one more ray per slot level above 2nd.
Why 7 comes up most: Six of the 36 possible pairs add up to 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4 and their reverses), but only one pair makes 2 and one makes 12. That is why 2d6 forms a triangle shape with the middle results far more common than the extremes. Totals from 6 to 8 come up 44.44% of the time. For the full breakdown, read 2d6 and 3d6 probability.

About this roller
DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
