Where you roll 5d6 in D&D

Sneak Attack: A rogue's Sneak Attack grows by 1d6 every odd level and hits 5d6 at levels 9 and 10. You get it once per turn when you hit with a finesse or ranged weapon and either have advantage or an ally is next to the target. Add the weapon die on top: a rapier (1d8 + 4) plus 5d6 averages 26. In the 2024 rules you can also give up some of those dice for a Cunning Strike effect, such as trying to knock the target prone. See Sneak Attack in 5e for the full table.

Spells: The 2024 Flame Strike deals 5d6 fire plus 5d6 radiant in a 10-foot-radius column, 35 on average from a failed Dexterity save. The 2014 version was weaker at 4d6 + 4d6. Upcasting also lands on 5d6: Burning Hands (base 3d6) from a 3rd-level slot and Guiding Bolt (base 4d6) from a 2nd-level slot. Burning Hands at 3rd level is still well behind a Fireball, so only do it if you don't have Fireball.

Monsters: The 2024 hell hound breathes a 15-foot cone of 5d6 fire (DC 12 Dexterity save, half on a success; it was 6d6 in 2014), and a pack of three breathing on the same group is a real threat to a party below level 5. A killer whale bites for 5d6 + 4. On 5d6 you roll 21 or more 22.15% of the time, 18 or more exactly half the time, and a perfect 30 once in 7,776 rolls.

About this roller

DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
