Where you roll 4d8 in D&D
Upcast spells: Several d8 spells land on 4d8 when you use a bigger slot. Shatter in a 3rd-level slot is 4d8 (18 on average), up from the base 3d8. Thunderwave starts at 2d8 and also hits 4d8 in a 3rd-level slot, and Spirit Guardians reaches 4d8 in a 4th-level slot. On the healing side, the 2024 Cure Wounds adds 2d8 per slot level, so a 2nd-level casting heals 4d8 + your modifier. Under the 2014 rules you needed a 4th-level slot for the same 4d8.
Cantrips at level 17: Sacred Flame, Ray of Frost, Shocking Grasp and other d8 cantrips get their fourth die at level 17. That is 18 damage on average from a spell that costs nothing, which is why cantrips stay relevant at the top levels even next to 9th-level slots.
Monsters: A wraith's Life Drain deals 4d8 + 3 necrotic (21 on average) and lowers the target's hit point maximum by the damage taken, so a long fight against one wears the whole party down. The winter wolf breathes a 15-foot cone of 4d8 cold, and a CR 1 copper dragon wyrmling breathes a line of 4d8 acid that can drop a 1st-level wizard who fails the save. On 4d8 you roll 25 or more 8.06% of the time and 18 or more 54.2% of the time.

About this roller
DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
