Where you roll 3d8 in D&D

Shatter: Shatter is a 2nd-level spell with a 60-foot range: every creature in a 10-foot-radius sphere makes a Constitution save, taking 3d8 thunder damage on a failure or half on a success (about 6.5 on average). Roll once for everyone. Against a cluster of goblin warriors with 10 HP each, a goblin that fails the save drops 83.59% of the time, but one that succeeds only drops if you roll 20 or more (6.84%). In the 2024 rules Constructs have disadvantage on the save; in 2014 it was any creature made of stone, crystal or metal. Each slot level above 2nd adds 1d8, so a 3rd-level Shatter is 4d8.

Other spells: Spirit Guardians deals 3d8 radiant (or necrotic for an evil caster) to enemies that fail a Wisdom save in a 15-foot emanation around you. It triggers when they enter or end their turn there, at most once per turn each, so walk into the middle of the fight and let it work for the whole minute. Chromatic Orb is a ranged spell attack for 3d8 of the damage type you choose, which makes it great against a monster with a known vulnerability.

Cantrips and monsters: At level 11, Sacred Flame, Ray of Frost and Shocking Grasp reach 3d8. On the DM side, a hill giant's tree club hits for 3d8 + 5 (18.5, listed as 18) and the 2024 mage's Arcane Burst for 3d8 + 3 (16). On 3d8 you roll 18 or more 16.41% of the time and 14 or more exactly half the time.

About this roller

DnD Dice Roller (dnddiceroller.org) rolls every die with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, crypto.getRandomValues, and uses rejection sampling so every face is exactly equally likely. The 3D dice only animate a result that has already been decided this way; the physics never picks the number. Rolls happen on your device and are never sent to our server.
