D&D 5e Magic Items: Full SRD List, Rarity, Attunement and Prices
Magic items in D&D 5e are rated by rarity: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare, Legendary and Artifact. The free SRD 5.2 includes 262 of them. About half require attunement, and a character can be attuned to only 3 items at once. The 2024 DMG prices them from about 100 GP (Common) to 200,000 GP (Legendary).
What magic items are in the 5e SRD?

What do magic item rarities mean?
Rarity is a power rating and a price guide in one. It also tells the DM roughly when an item should show up in a campaign.
| Rarity | Typical first appearance | 2024 DMG price | 2014 DMG range | SRD examples |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Common | Level 1+ | 100 GP | 50–100 gp | Potion of Climbing, Potion of Healing |
| Uncommon | Level 1+ | 400 GP | 101–500 gp | Bag of Holding, Cloak of Protection, Weapon +1 |
| Rare | Level 5+ | 4,000 GP | 501–5,000 gp | Flame Tongue, Ring of Protection, Boots of Speed |
| Very Rare | Level 11+ | 40,000 GP | 5,001–50,000 gp | Weapon +3, Armor +2 |
| Legendary | Level 17+ | 200,000 GP | 50,001+ gp | Vorpal Sword, Holy Avenger, Staff of the Magi |
| Artifact | Campaign-defining | Priceless | Priceless | Dragon Orb |
The 2024 guide halves the price of consumables, so a Common potion runs about 50 GP, which matches the Potion of Healing's price in the Player's Handbook. The 2014 DMG gave wide price ranges instead of one figure, so many 2014 tables leaned on Xanathar's Guide or their own pricing.
By count, the SRD is weighted toward the middle: 89 items start at Rare, 78 at Uncommon, 54 at Very Rare and 32 at Legendary. Only one item, the Potion of Climbing, is plain Common; the basic Potion of Healing is Common too but sits under a shared entry with its stronger versions. Most Common trinkets live in other books.
How does attunement work in 5e?
Some items only work for someone who has bonded with them. In the SRD, 136 of the 262 items require attunement, a little over half.
- How to attune: spend a short rest focused on the item. You can't do it during the same short rest you use to learn its properties.
- The limit: three attuned items at once. You can't attune to two copies of the same item.
- Prerequisites: some items name a class or other requirement, like "requires attunement by a wizard". If you don't meet it, you can't attune.
- Ending it: you can end attunement on a short rest. It also ends if you die, if someone else attunes to the item, or if you're more than 100 feet from it for 24 hours.
The three-item cap is the real economy of high-level play. A level 12 fighter holding a Flame Tongue, a Cloak of Protection and an Amulet of Health has to drop one of them to use Boots of Speed. Items without attunement, such as weapon and armor bonuses, a Bag of Holding or potions, don't count toward the limit, which makes them more valuable than their rarity suggests.
How do you identify a magic item?
Hold the item and focus on it during a short rest, or cast Identify. Some properties reveal themselves by use: put on a ring and you may notice you're invisible. Curses are the exception. A cursed item usually hides its curse from both methods until it bites, which is half the fun for the DM.
How should a DM hand out magic items?
- Start small: give consumables first. A few potions and a Spell Scroll at level 1 to 4 add options without breaking encounters.
- Watch AC and attack bonuses: +1 weapons, +1 armor and the Ring of Protection stack with everything. Two or three of them on one character shift the math of every fight. Check with the encounter calculator if a fight suddenly feels too easy.
- Favor fun over numbers: an Immovable Rod or a Bag of Holding creates more table stories than a +1 sword.
- Decide on shops early: many campaigns treat magic shops as rare or nonexistent. If you allow them, use the price table above and limit stock to Common and Uncommon items.
What are the most popular magic items?
Three come up at almost every table, and each has its own guide:
- Potion of Healing: 2d4 + 2 hit points, the default consumable.
- Bag of Holding: 500 pounds of storage in a 5-pound bag.
- Deck of Many Things: the legendary card deck that can make or end a campaign in one draw.
FAQ
How many magic items can you attune to in 5e?
Three. If you want to attune to a fourth, you must first end your attunement to one of the others. You also cannot attune to more than one copy of the same item.
How much do magic items cost in 5e?
The 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide suggests about 100 GP for Common, 400 GP for Uncommon, 4,000 GP for Rare, 40,000 GP for Very Rare and 200,000 GP for Legendary items, with potions and scrolls at half price. Artifacts cannot be bought.
How do you identify a magic item in 5e?
Spend a short rest handling and focusing on the item, or cast the Identify spell. Either reveals what it does, though a curse can stay hidden until it takes effect.
What does attunement mean in D&D?
Attunement is a magical bond with an item. Items that require it give little or no benefit until you spend a short rest focused on the item. Attunement ends if you die, another creature attunes to the item, or you are more than 100 feet from it for 24 hours.
What magic items should a level 1 character have?
Usually none beyond a Potion of Healing or two. The DMG guidance puts Common and Uncommon items at tier 1 (levels 1 to 4), Rare items from level 5, Very Rare from level 11 and Legendary from level 17.
