Actions

Multiattack. The wight makes two attacks, using Necrotic Sword or Necrotic Bow in any combination. It can replace one attack with a use of Life Drain.

Necrotic Sword. Melee Attack Roll: +4, reach 5 ft. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) Slashing damage plus 4 (1d8) Necrotic damage.

Necrotic Bow. Ranged Attack Roll: +4, range 150/600 ft. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) Piercing damage plus 4 (1d8) Necrotic damage.

Life Drain. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 13, one creature within 5 feet. Failure: 6 (1d8 + 2) Necrotic damage, and the target’s Hit Point maximum decreases by an amount equal to the damage taken. A Humanoid slain by this attack rises 24 hours later as a Zombie under the wight’s control, unless the Humanoid is restored to life or its body is destroyed. The wight can have no more than twelve zombies under its control at a time.

How to run the wight

Sword or bow: A wight can mix its Necrotic Sword and Necrotic Bow freely, so it shoots at range 150 feet while the party closes and draws its blade when they arrive. Each attack averages 10.5 damage and hits AC 15 half the time. It has darkvision but Sunlight Sensitivity, so it fights in tombs, barrows and at night.

Drain the living: In melee it trades one attack for Life Drain. In the 2024 rules this is a DC 13 Constitution save, not an attack roll, so heavy armor doesn't help; a character with a +2 Constitution save fails half the time. A failure deals 6 (1d8 + 2) necrotic damage and cuts the target's hit point maximum by the same amount. A humanoid killed this way rises as a zombie under the wight's control a day later, up to twelve at a time.

How to counter it: Drag it into sunlight, where it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. It resists necrotic damage, so chill touch is a poor choice, while radiant damage such as sacred flame works well. Run a wight with a few zombies and track them in the initiative tracker.
