Traits
Adhesive (Object Form Only). The mimic adheres to anything that touches it. A Huge or smaller creature adhered to the mimic has the Grappled condition (escape DC 13). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have Disadvantage.
Actions
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +5 (with Advantage if the target is Grappled by the mimic), reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) Piercing damage—or 12 (2d8 + 3) Piercing damage if the target is Grappled by the mimic—plus 4 (1d8) Acid damage.
Pseudopod. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) Bludgeoning damage plus 4 (1d8) Acid damage. If the target is a Large or smaller creature, it has the Grappled condition (escape DC 13). Ability checks made to escape this grapple have Disadvantage.
Bonus Actions
Shape-Shift. The mimic shape-shifts to resemble a Medium or Small object while retaining its game statistics, or it returns to its true blob form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn’t transformed.
How to run the mimic
Not always a chest: Every player expects the treasure chest. Use a door, a wardrobe, a lectern, a stool by the fire, or the one chest in the room that is real next to two fakes. In the 2024 rules shape-shifting is a bonus action, so a mimic can turn back into an object and still attack in the same turn.
Glue and chew: Once someone is stuck, the bite gets advantage and more damage, about 16.5 on average. Against AC 16 that is a 75% hit chance instead of 50%. Escape checks against its grapple have disadvantage, so the victim may be stuck for several rounds. Roll the acid on the d8 roller.
How to beat one: Poke suspicious furniture with a pole or a thrown object first; the item sticks, not you. Once it is revealed, a 20-foot speed means you can step back and use ranged attacks. Acid does nothing to it. If you like this kind of trap, the animated rug of smothering works the same room.
